1. What do the maps tell us about the importance of a good water supply for the establishment of a civilisation?
The importance of the river according to the maps is that it is a life line supply for civilization. When you see a river indicated on a map it would been that near that river would be food, water supply, animals, cities etc, and these are all essential in an every day basis. It is shown on maps that surrounding the river are forests, pastures, cities and farmlands, all these would not exist if it were not for a major water supply.
2. WHAT DO THE MAPS TELL US ABOUT CONTINUITY AND CHANGE IN THIS AREA OF THE WORLD?
The maps show the location and length of the river which is vital for the people of the Indus Valley. It also shows the location of the forests and mountains. These areas changed dramatically over time. As people settled in the areas, they cut down the trees in the forest and used the wood for building and fire. This in turn changed the valleys climate. It was cooler and drier, effecting the river. Monsoonal rain which caused flooding and earthquakes also changed the natural layout of the river .
3. SOURCE 1A IS A MODERN MAP SHOWING ANCINET PLACES. WHAT PROBLEMS MIGHT THIS CAUSE FOR HISTORIANS WISHING TO USE IT AS EVIDNECE OF WHERE THESE PLACES WERE?
Source 1A is a problem for historians because the names have changed since the ancient times. Therefore, places are hard to find as there is no evidence of their existence. Rivers have also changed. some have dried up and other have changed their direction due to natural causes, such as earthquakes. Also, the map is not accurate as it is only showing the basic length of certain river bodies, there are no names, or no indication that it is surrounded by mountains or forests.
